The nearest town is Silves, just 10 minutes by car, where you can explore the small streets, cafes and restaurants and enjoy local Portuguese specialities.

Silves was the capital of the Algarve during the occupation by the Moors (13th century) and is known for its rich history. This includes the castle and bridge over the Arade river which are remnants of that era. In early August every year Silves remembers its past by converting back to the the Middle Ages, to give you a real idea of what it used to be like.

You can also visit the local vegetable and fish market, filled with local produce and freshly caught fish.

The house in centrally situated in the Algarve, meaning you are ideally placed for visiting various areas in southern Portugal. The beautiful beaches, for which the Algarve is famous, are just 30 minutes drive away. If you want to visit the wild west coast or stand at the south western most point of the European mainland, these are less than an hours drive. To the east are the sprawling beaches around the Ria Formosa nature reserve?? with its scenic walking routes, also highly recommended and just one hour from the house.

Within an hours drive to the north east you are in the steppe like landscape around Alentejo, a different world again. This special landscape plays host to special birds including both Great and Little Bustards, European Roller and the threatened and impressive Spanish Imperial Eagle.

You can also visit the highest mountain in the Algarve, Monchique. If you go right to the highest point you obtain a spectacular view over the western Algarve. On the way there are many souvenir shops and delicious food and drink at the numerous small restaurants.

Although so well known for its beaches, rocky landscapes and luxury golf courses the Algarve offers so much more.

Cycling and walking routes through the whole of the Algarve, the most famous of which is the Via Algarviana which crosses the Algarve from east to west but there are many more routes which are just as stunning.

Boat trips along the Arade river, visit and snorkel around the coastal caves, with crystal clear water are just a few of the other options.
